Yep, historical fiction. This is the second book in the Saxon Stories series by Cornwell. Forgot how much I love his books!
I love The Warlord Chronicles by Cornwell. Hope that this is equally good.

I’m slightly biased in that I’ve enjoyed all his books I’ve read so far but this series is turning out to be very good. 🙂
