Having finally finished Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix last night, I’m happy to be starting The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon by David Grann.  Let’s start with the preface shall we.

“I pulled the map from my back pocket.  It was wet and crumpled, the lines I had traced to highlight my route now faded.” (page 6 of 325 on Nook)

My teaser today comes from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

“Harry had been looking forward to the weekend trip into Hogsmeade, but there was one thing worrying him.  Sirius had maintained a stony silence since he had appeared in the fire at the beginning of September; Harry knew they had made him angry by saying that they did not want him to come — but he still worried from time to time that Sirius might throw caution to the winds and turn up anyway.” (332-333)

Today I start Mockingjay by Suzanna Collins.  When I put this book on hold at the library, I was number 48 in the queue.  I figured I wouldn’t get a chance to read the book until next year considering how slow my library can be with popular books, but then something miraculous happened — my hold came in!  So today, Mockingjay.

“I run my fingers through the thick layer of bubbles in my tub.  Cleaning me up is just a preliminary step to determining my new look.” (59)

Ignoring the rather large, towering stack of library books that will all be due soon and The Historian read along I’m taking part in, I decided yesterday that I wanted to continue with my Harry Potter re-read.  I’m on the fourth book, Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling.

“Yeah, I want to play Quidditch,” said Harry suddenly.  “Hang on, I’ll get my Firebolt.”

Hermione left the room, muttering something that sounded very much like “Boys.” (150)

Today I’ll be starting The Thieves of Manhattan by Adam Langer so let’s all take a look at the first page shall we.

“To tell you the truth, I’d have noticed the guy even if Faye hadn’t pointed him out to me.  He was slicker than the usual Morningside Coffee crowd — off-white linen suit, black silk shirt buttoned to the throat, Jonathan Frazen-style designer glasses — but what made stop wiping table and look just a bit longer was the fact that he was reading a copy of Blade by Blade.” (3)

Last Tuesday I slept late and missed the teasing so this week, it’s TWO teasers. And, since I’m reading a non-fiction book and I like the fiction teasers more, I thought I would do one from my current read and one from my next read.

First up, The Whale: In Search of the Giants of the Sea by Philip Hoare.
