Teaser Tuesdays

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. The idea is to give everyone a look inside the book you’re reading.

1.) Grab your current read

2.) Open to a random page

3.) Share two teaser sentences from that page

4.) Share the title and author so that other participants know what you’re reading.

Be careful not to include spoilers. You don’t want to ruin the book for others!

My teaser this week —

“’That, or he’s trying to draw us into some kind of trap,’ Kirk said. ‘Either way, we can’t meet him in a head-on battle. We need an edge…a diversion. Find me one, Mr. Spock.’”

Star Trek: The Great Adventures, Book 1, adapted by James Blish, page 70.

My teaser this week —

“Thomas smiled. “It’s all right, no one will hurt you. Hold on to the bow. If anyone looks at you, say, ‘I am an archer’s woman.’”

The Archer’s Tale by Bernard Cornwell, page 209.

The Archer's Tale

I just started this book so a teaser for me too. This series is my Thanksgiving reading this year. I don’t know if I’ll have time to get through all three books, but I’m hopeful.

My teaser this week, with a short caveat — I’m cheating this week. Yes, I’m giving more than you ask for but while I was reading I thought this one small paragraph said so much about the character that I wanted to share it. It’s dripping with ambition and you know who and what Nefertiti is about. Enjoy.

“She stopped in the courtyard, where the chariots were waiting to take us to the building site of the new temple. The cobra on her crown, nestled in her dark hair, glinted in the sun. “I love him as much as any woman ever will. You don’t understand. You’re only fourteen. But love means lying.””

Nefertiti by Michelle Moran, pg. 167.

I was hoping to have finished Nefertiti by now but life has conspired against me the last few days. It’s turning out to be an all week read but it’s a fun read.

My Teaser this week:

“The cold exhausted me and I didn’t know how long Grace would be up with her parents, so I climbed into bed without turning on the light. Sitting there in the dim moonlight, leaning against the pillows, I rubbed life back into my frozen toes and listened to Grace’s distant voice down the hall.”

My Teaser this week:

“The vessel that was the bear us toward Rome was my mother’s thalamegos, a ship so large that its pillared courtyards had once hosted my father’s mock battles on horseback. From the docks, I could hear the Roman soldiers exclaiming in delight over every small detail on board: the fountains and potted palms in the grottos, the ivory-paneled bedrooms with their gilded images of Isis, the cedar chairs and embroidered couches.”

My Teaser this week:

“In looks he was tall, thin, and gray, with bifocals that forced him at all times to lean slightly forward. These made him particularly unpleasant to talk to at parties, where one felt inspected and analyzed at every conversational turn.”

I love this description. It’s perfect imagery — at least for me. 🙂

“All the hairs were standing up on Quentin’s arms, but he knew what he was doing. His fingers left almost imperceptible phosphorescent trails behind them in the air.”

I finished this last night and hope to have a longer review up by the end of the week. Very quickly though, I liked it but the Harry Potter comparisons were a bit annoying after a while.

My Teaser this week:

“On Sunday morning the change was one day nearer. I was resolute about not thinking my three magic words and would not let them into my mind, but the air of change was so strong that there was no avoiding it; change lay over the stairs and the kitchen and the garden like fog.”

I haven’t started this yet so a teaser for me too.
