Booking Through Thursday – Twists & Turns

January 28, 2010

This week’s Booking Through Thursday asks — Jackie says, “I love books with complicated plots and unexpected endings. What is your favourite book with a fantastic twist at the end?”

So, today’s question is in two parts.

1.Do YOU like books with complicated plots and unexpected endings?

2.What book with a surprise ending is your favorite? Or your least favorite?

Yes, I do like books that have unexpected endings and keep me guessing or try to anyway. As I said here before, when a book pulls me in, I sometimes read ahead when I want to know what’s going on. I like to get concerned about the characters, wonder and worry about what’s going to happen, and then, when it’s all over, be satisfied and still want more.

Revolutionary Road

One of my favorite books is Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates. I wasn’t fully expecting the ending, or at least I kept hoping it wouldn’t end that way, and it was heart-wrenching. If you haven’t read it, it’s an absolutely fantastic book and I highly recommend it.  If you’re interested, you can read my review here.

Know a book with an unexpected or great ending?

I’ve had Revolutionary Road on a TBR list for a long time. May have to bump it up!

What an interesting choice! I haven’t read this, but I did read The Easter Parade last year. Yates is rather bleak, but he’s such a good writer.

I agree, I love surprise endings. I’m always tempted to try and read ahead but I never do. I haven’t read Revolutionary Road, i’ll have to check it out.

I have no shame…I read ahead if I want to know something. :-)

I like surprise endings as long as they really fit in with the plot. Sometimes an ending can seem kind of tacked on, like the author couldn’t think of anything else, and I find that annoying.

I am planning to read The Revolutionary Road in the next month or two. I didn’t realise it had a twist in the end. I’m looking forward to it even more now!

I wouldn’t say it’s a big twist, you can see it coming. You just hope it doesn’t go there and then it does.

The Thirteenth Tale’s ending took me by surprise. Sassy by Gloria Mallette while not exactly complicated did have some plot twists that took me by surprise.
